The Australian Education Union

Work Partners works with the AEU to engage teams of membership recruitment consultants
to visit TAFEs, schools and early childhood centres to engage teachers in conversation
about the numerous benefits of joining
the union
.

Both the union and Work Partners are involved
in training and employing the consultants, and deciding when and where they go.

The presence of the membership consultants increases discussion of unions and the
visibility of the union.

Current members are pleased to see
the union at work building membership in
a way that will increase the influence and participation of employees in the workplace.

This work has resulted in a massive increase
in people joining the union
, especially amongst sessional teachers who have
previously been very difficult to reach.

Small teams visit by arrangement

Arrangements are made with each educational institution to visit and speak with teachers.

Team members wear appropriate dress and are properly authorised by the union.

They do not give industrial advice, but talk with teachers about the union and the benefits of joining.

More than 7,000 new members
in 24 months

In partnership with Work Partners, the AEU recruited more than 7,000 new members over a period of 24 months.

As a result, its membership is at its highest level ever.

"To whom It May Concern

Work Partners has, over the last 24 months, recruited approximately 7,000 new union members for the AEU Victoria, in both the schools and TAFE sectors.

Their recruitment has reached some areas where we have so far not been able to push density to desirable levels.

The level of retention of members appears to be similar to recruitment by normal in-house means.

The systems we have created for handling this major recruitment drive are functioning smoothly.

As a result of both our in-house and external recruitment, we now have the highest level of membership the union has ever had.

I highly recommend Work Partners as a further means of increasing union membership and therefore density. All the research shows that the higher the union density the better the outcome when it comes to bargaining."
